From old worn out shingles to vibrant IKO Dynasty Summit Grey Shingles

This roof started as a built-up tar roof. The homeowner had some leaking issues and with built up tar it is next to impossible to truly find where the leak is coming from or repair it once you find it. We decided the best course of action was to replace the roof with EPDM membrane for a nice watertight roof.

Vita Roofing recently completed a full roof and garage replacement for Todd, a homeowner in the Grand Forks, ND area who knew it was time for a long-lasting upgrade. With North Dakota’s harsh weather in mind, Todd wanted a roof system that offered durability, protection, and curb appeal. After a thorough inspection revealed worn materials and the need for improved weatherproofing, Vita Roofing recommended the IKO Dynasty Shingles, Class 3 Impact Rated, algae-resistant asphalt shingles installed using the trusted Klaus Roofing System. This premium shingle line not only enhances the home’s appearance but also provides superior resistance to storms, moisture, and temperature swings.

The project began with a complete removal of the old roofing system down to the decking, followed by a detailed inspection to identify and replace any soft or rotten areas. Vita Roofing then applied two rows of Sealoron XT Ice & Water Barrier along all eaves and one row through each valley to safeguard the roof’s most vulnerable points. All decking seams were sealed with Sealoron XT Deck Tape, and the remaining surface was protected with Velora One Synthetic Underlayment, ensuring a tight, reliable secondary layer of defense beneath the new shingles.

To finish the system, the team installed aluminum drip edge around the entire perimeter, along with seam tape and additional drip edge reinforcement along the eaves for maximum water control. The SealoronXT Extreme Temperature membrane, engineered exclusively for Klaus Roofing Systems, was applied at all eaves, valleys, and penetrations, offering exceptional grip, texture, and long-term protection against ice and water damage. With this complete roofing system in place, Todd can feel confident knowing his home and garage are fully protected and ready to withstand North Dakota’s toughest seasons.

Property owner Rodney in Ada, MN, called Vita Roofing after repeated leaks began interrupting business operations. The roof had been badly damaged by years of severe weather, and standing water could be seen in multiple areas after every rainstorm. The existing roof system consisted of a loose rock-covered EPDM roof with an older modified bitumen and tar roof hidden underneath. By the time Vita Roofing completed its detailed inspection, it was clear that patching the roof would only be a temporary fix.

The expert crew first removed the heavy layer of rock that covered most of the roof. Once the rock was cleared away, the old EPDM membrane was torn off, followed by the failing modified bitumen and tar roofing beneath it. With the roof opened up, the team discovered extensive structural damage caused by trapped moisture. Vita Roofing made major structural repairs throughout the building, using pressure-treated 2x8, 2x10, and 2x12 lumber to reinforce weakened sections. Areas that could be saved were sistered in and repaired, while severely damaged sections were fully replaced.

The next step was replacing all rotted and moisture-damaged roof decking to create a solid foundation for the new roofing system. Once the new decking was installed, Vita Roofing applied a brand-new EPDM membrane and secured it with bonding adhesive to create a long-lasting seal. Thanks to the complete replacement and structural repairs, this Ada commercial building now has a roof that is stronger, safer, and ready for years of protection.
